In their first game against the Sherwood Park Crusaders this BCHL season, the Blackfalds Bulldogs fell 4-1 at the Sherwood Park Arena on Tuesday.
Almost four minutes into the first period, Sherwood Park’s Hunter Price scored on Blackfalds goaltender Gabe Gratton, putting the home team on the scoreboard 1-0.
By the end, with less than two minutes left in regulation, the Bulldogs’ Trent LeDrew scored from the top of the point on Crusaders netminder Erick Roest. Assisted by Brendan Ross and Dakota MacIntosh, the teams were now tied 1-1.
The Crusaders, however, would be starting their next period with one man down as Price received a roughing penalty with 22 seconds left on the clock.
The Bulldogs were outshooting the Crusaders 10-7 after 20 minutes of play.
Shorthanded, the Crusaders’ Noah Wills managed to score a goal less than one minute into the second period, taking over the lead 2-1.
Later, as Blackfalds’ Brendan Gillmore was sent to the box for slashing, Sherwood Park’s Wills scored for a second time with a power play goal at the 8:36 mark, pushing their lead to 3-1.
The Crusaders outshot the Bulldogs 14-8 in the middle frame.
In the final period, with Blackfalds’ Ross getting a penalty early on for cross-checking, Sherwood Park’s Logan Hauer capitalized on the power play opportunity with a goal at 2:35, solidifying their 4-1 victory.
The Crusaders outshot the Bulldogs once again in the third period 16-11.
