In a neck-and-neck game on Friday, the Blackfalds Bulldogs lost 4-3 in overtime against the Okotoks Oilers at the Okotoks Centennial Arena.
The Bulldogs finished their three-week road trip 1-2-1-0 against the Alberta teams in the BCHL.
The same three Bulldogs, Alexander Dimitriadis, Otto Hanson, and Jayden Joly, were fully responsible for the team’s goal scoring this evening, each earning one goal and various assists.
The Oilers opened the scoreboard 1-0 in the first period at 8:15 with a goal by Jack Silverberg on Bulldogs goaltender Gabe Gratton.
But just 28 seconds later, Blackfalds’ Dimitriadis scored his third goal of the season from the low slot on Okotoks’ netminder Mikael Kingo. Otto Hanson and Jayden Joly got the apples to tie the game 1-1.
Shots on goal were close after 20 minutes of play, with Blackfalds holding the upper hand over Okotoks at 10-9.
The Bulldogs took over the lead early in the second period, as Joly scored his second goal of the season while being trampled over by two Oilers players. Hanson assisted the goal at 2:36, putting them at 2-1.
However, at 5:19 Okotoks’ Silverberg scored for the second time, tying the game once again at 2-2.
The Bulldogs swapped out goaltender Gratton for Wilson Maxfield during a short break at 12:24 due to an injury.
With less than three minutes left in regulation, Blackfalds’ Hanson took back the lead with his first goal of the season. Once again, Joly and Dimitriadis claimed the assists, bringing the game to 3-2 in their favour.
The Oilers outshot the Bulldogs in the second period 11-8.
In the final period, Okotoks’ Connor Gourley evened the match at 3-3 with a goal at 3:42.
The remainder of the period was left without a goal nor a penalty, pushing the game into overtime.
This time, it was the Bulldogs who outshot the Oilers in the third period 8-5.
Okotoks’ Sam Huck scored on the first shot on goal recorded in the 10-minute overtime. The goal at 2:17 gave the home team a 4-3 win.
